Cortex

Part of an ongoing series of environmental and site-responsive pieces for Cumbria-based paper manufacturer, James Cropper Speciality Papers. This indoor piece was created for Luxe Pack trade show in Shanghai. 'Cortex' is a twisted mountain tree clothed in 5,300 pieces of die-cut paper. The piece was inspired by an Alexander McQueen design. The individual pieces cling to the surface of the tree and accentuate the curves and contours like a second skin. Made from 'Azurite Blue' paper stock, the folds and turns in the piece form a myriad of shades around the main colour.

The piece was created in China in studios kindly provided by the Art and Design Technology Institute in Suzhou - a city 80km north of Shanghai and famed for its historic gardens and waterways. Following the Shanghai show, the piece was given to the Art and Design Technology Institute for their permanent collection.
