Scope

Borrans Park overlooks the northern shore of Windermere with extensive views south down the lake. Part of the park lies over the site of a roman fort, built to protect the main east-west route through the lakes with clear views of all approach routes over the surrounding fells and the lake.

‘Scope’ is a reflective device for looking at the surrounding fells and down the lake. A giant mirrored funnel pointing south over the lake, the pentagonal interior surface breaks and reflects the landscape into repetitive patterns like a kaleidoscope. While looking out towards the lake through the narrow end the view is framed within the piece and gently reflected on each side, the view from the lake towards the fells has the most effect- the reflections multiplying up. From certain angles the reflections form a complete sphere.
